John Mulaney’s Former Fans Are Being Even Weirder About the Birth of His Second Child
John Mulaney and his wife Olivia Munn just revealed the birth of their second child, a totally normal announcement that internet lunatics have no reason to take personally.
When it comes to the online discourse surrounding comedians’ personal lives, the undisputed king of unintentionally provoking parasocial outrage is Mulaney, the internet’s ex-boyfriend and public enemy number one among many members of the Tumblr generation. When Mulaney broke out into mainstream mega-success with his smash hit 2012 stand-up special New in Town, hordes of terminally online Millennial women took Mulaney’s boyish charm, his dapper performance attire and his puckish stage persona as an invitation to form an unhealthy romantic attachment to the long-time Saturday Night Live writer and crafter of incredible bits such as the “What’s New Pussycat?” diner debacle.
After nearly a decade of Mulaney fans talking about the stand-up as if he’s some creepy combination of a K-pop star and a vibrating teddy bear, in early 2021, Mulaney’s then-wife, multimedia artist Anna Marie Tendler, shocked her famous husband’s fandom by announcing that she and Mulaney were separating as he prepared to end their six-year marriage. Just four months later, Mulaney revealed that he and his new partner Munn were expecting a child, and the timeline-constructors and celebrity sex-lives sleuths of TikTok went absolutely fucking insane.

Today, Munn and Mulaney are happily married and raising a family of four, having announced the recent birth of their daughter Méi this Sunday on Instagram. In response to the birth of a child with whom they have no connection and will (hopefully) never meet, Mulaney’s still-angry former fans melted down as if Supernatural was somehow canceled again while the remaining parasocialists in his following squealed with clearly sexual delight at Mulaney becoming a “girldad.”
As one Mulaney defender pointed out, the comments under Munn’s Instagram announcement are somehow even more disturbed and self-righteous than the first wave of blowback to Mulaney and Munn starting a family.
“I sincerely hope both babies grow up to dislike their parents for how they’ve treated others I hope they become the kids in the future that never visit their parents anymore lol,” one deranged commenter wrote under a picture of two parents and a newborn child.
One Reddit thread about the baby announcement was a mixed bag of fans congratulating the couple and conspiracy theorists presenting their takedowns of Mulaney and Munn. Others expressed their personal hurt over the existence of the Munn/Mulaney family, with one writing, “Good luck to them both but John you’re still a piece of shit for putting your ex through that and Olivia, you’re just a piece of shit.”
Sadly, the parasocial meltdown over Mulaney’s personal life may only get even more gross and weird the more his family grows. God forbid Munn and Mulaney ever adopt a dog, or we’ll see TikTok witches casting spells to fill its bowl with chocolate.
