Everything You Need to Know About Joyelle Nicole Johnson, According to Joyelle Nicole Johnson

The stand-up comic dropped a new set on OFTV last week

Joyelle Nicole Johnson has built a hilariously impressive comedy resume that includes a spot on Vulture’s Comedians You Should Know list, a Peacock stand-up special called Lovejoyspots with Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers and an appearance last week on OFTV’s stand-up series LMAOF

Along the way, she found the time to tell us everything you should know about her…

“As a kid, I loved George Carlin.”

“My mother sent me to asthma camp when I was 11, and I would send her letters while I was being, as I put it, ‘held hostage.’ One of her responses said, ‘Your letter was very funny, I might have a little comedian on my hands.’”

“The first time I did stand-up for real? Oh, man. I was hanging with an older comic and headed to do one of his shows in Long Beach. It was an ‘urban’ room, which just means all Black people. I went up there after smoking a joint and had the crowd in the first 15 seconds with a gimmick and then lost them and bombed my ass off.”

“The host, who I found out afterward was a member of a very popular gang, looked like he wanted to murder me. I never returned to the scene of that particular crime.”

“My most ridiculous job was being a private yoga instructor to rich middle school and high school kids with anxiety on the Upper West Side.”

“Stevie Wonder is my favorite singer of all time. When I met him, I was shaking. And the pic we took, you can tell in my face.”

“My comedy has changed a lot since that first night. I know myself better, and I’m more confident in trying new bits. After 15-plus years, I can tell if something is going to be funny without trying it onstage yet.”

“I’m excited about joining the OFTV platform and the opportunity to get my name out in front of a new audience — and, of course, make more money!”
