Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s Live-Action Musical With Kendrick Lamar to Premiere Next Fourth of July

The ‘South Park’ creators’ musical comedy collaboration with the superstar rapper will have a patriotic premiere date next summer

Next Independence Day, American South Park fans and Kendrick Lamar stans can celebrate the anniversary of our country’s founding by watching Lamar, Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s comedic collaboration, a live-action, feature-length musical movie, the details of which are still mostly a mystery — no word on whether the massive firework snake will make an appearance.

Earlier today, Paramount Pictures CEO Brian Robbins officially announced that a feature film from the South Park co-creators and the 17-time Grammy-winning rapper will hit theaters in the summer of 2025 with a holiday release date targeted for the project. During Paramount’s presentation at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, Robbins declined to reveal too many specifics about the live-action comedy musical, only admitting that, when he read the final draft of the screenplay, he found that, “This script is one of the funniest, craziest and most original scripts we’ve ever read and it’s certain to create some fireworks when it hits theaters on July 4th, 2025.”

Given the patriotic premiere date, Parker and Stone probably won’t have to source those fireworks from Mexico this time around.

“I’m excited to announce that we’re going into production this summer on a musical from the creators of South Park, Matt Stone and Trey Parker,” Robbins introduced the project during the Nevada convention. He also revealed that the untitled film will begin shooting this summer, with Lamar and his creative partner Dave Free serving as producers through their company PGLang. Parker and Stone will produce through their company Park County.

The project has been in the works since 2022, with South Park writer, producer and voice actor and adult animation icon Vernon Chatman working on the script (most notably, Chatman is the voice of Towelie). In addition to his contributions to South Park, Chatman created the bizarro black comedy puppet show Wonder Showzen for MTV2 as well as the surrealist spiritual comedy series Xavier: Renegade Angel on Adult Swim.

Beyond the list of impressive figures attached to the project as well as its festive release date, little else is known about the film. With Lamar attached to the production, maybe this could be Parker and Stones attempt at a rap musical in the style of Hamilton. Basically, they could be making the polar opposite of The Book of Mormon
