6 Times ‘SNL’ Cast Members Impersonated Each Other
From Phil Hartman to Darrell Hammond to Jay Pharoah to James Austin Johnson, Saturday Night Live usually employs a professional mimic to goof on politicians, celebrities, and anyone else in the news worthy of a comedy slap. But the show’s cast members don’t only have a bagful of celeb impressions at the ready — many of them also do imitations of their coworkers. Here are six times Saturday Night Live made fun of its own.

Dana Carvey Doing Dennis Miller
While not outright cruel, Carvey was absolutely skewering Miller with his impression — the too-hip-for-the-room catchphrases, the vain flip of the rock-star hair, the smug cackles at his own jokes. Give credit to Miller. He takes the ribbing in stride, recognizing that Carvey’s imitation was a mostly sincere form of flattery. You didn’t see anybody doing Kevin Nealon Update impressions, did you?
Chloe Fineman Doing Everybody (And Punkie Johnson Doing Chloe)
Fineman doesn’t get enough credit for being a gifted mimic. In this sketch, she tackles nearly every female member of the cast including Kate McKinnon, Cecily Strong, Melissa Villaseñor, Aidy Bryant, Heidi Gardner, and Sarah Sherman. She wisely sidesteps an Ego Nwodim impersonation (see #6 below) before Johnson breaks out her own imperfect but hilarious Fineman.
Melissa Villaseñor Doing Kristen Wiig and Kate McKinnon
SNL has gone to the animation VO sketch in recent years to show off the cast’s celeb voices. For the all-too-real sounding Zoo-opolis, Villaseñor does her own McKinnon as well as a killer Kristen Wiig. Bonus points for Kenan Thompson busting out his Tracy Morgan.
Alex Moffat Doing Al Franken
Kudos to the SNL makeup department for transforming Moffat into a doppelganger for the former Minnesota senator. The impression ain’t bad either.
Everybody Doing Adam Sandler
If you forgot that Sandler developed several hit SNL and movie characters back in the day, this sketch serves as a good reminder. Chris Redd, Kristen Wiig, Jimmy Fallon, Kyle Mooney, Mikey Day, Pete Davidson, Melissa Villaseñor, Aidy Bryant, Thompson, Moffat, and Beck Bennett give us their best Sandman impressions. For cast members who grew up with Sandler, these were probably first done in middle school to crack up the lunchroom.
Jimmy Fallon Doing Chris Rock
This dumb choice resurfaced in recent years and Fallon got blasted, prompting an apology on Twitter/X in 2020: “In 2000, while on SNL, I made a terrible decision to do an impersonation of Chris Rock while in blackface. There is no excuse for this. I am very sorry for making this unquestionably offensive decision and thank all of you for holding me accountable.”
