'Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2' Suffers From The Scariest Glitch: Nan Propagation
We've previously talked about many glitches in the Call Of Duty series, like that time rogue players began dominating matches by donning Iron Man-style armor and weaponry, but it's the first time we're seeing something as unintentionally awesome and horrific as this evil fog from the Modern Warfare 2 beta that consumes the entire map and every player on it.
No, that's not a wise-ass reference to Lost, to any John Carpenter property, or even a preview of the new deadly gas for the upcoming Warzone Battle Royale mode reinvention. That's actually the result of something called Nan Propagation, the name of a type of glitch stemming from extreme engine and hardware stress – probably not a good sign for the Modern Warfare 2 beta. It begins from just one stressed pixel and quickly propagates, growing large enough to take over the entire play area shortly after. This is great because it unintentionally conveys a scarier atmosphere than most horror games can – even when they're doing their very best to be scary. The glitch is rather rare, so this is hardly a game-threatening issue, and this is still the beta, which means they can fix it before release, so let's enjoy the evil fog as well as its weird variants as much as we can.
This isn't even a Modern Warfare-only thing, as it has already ironically appeared on other games such as Mordhau, which is basically Ancient Warfare.
But the evil smoke we just witnessed on Modern Warfare 2 is a cut above the rest, showing a clear evolution and refinement when it comes to game-destroying glitches. We can only hope they find a way to bring it into the game in an actual feature capacity.
