Time travel; it’s the reason why Back to the Future wasn’t simply a depressing drama about a miserable teen whose only friend is an unbalanced senior citizen. It’s also factoring into a lot of upcoming movies and TV shows. We just learned that even the sequel to Beavis and Butt-Head Do America will feature its iconic cartoon slacker protagonists traveling through time. Seriously.
Don't Miss
If you ever complained that the original series featured too many poop jokes and not enough complex quantum physics, Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe will reportedly find the duo attending space camp, at which point they fall “through a black hole” and “reemerge in our time.” This may just be a convenient way for the creative forces behind the franchise to tamp down the ‘90s aesthetic and Megadeth references, but it also seems to be part of a larger trend …
First of all, the new Flash movie is likely pulling from the “Flashpoint” comic arc, which will involve Barry Allen traveling through time, which somehow leads to him hanging out with Michael Keaton. Then there’s the reboot of Quantum Leap and Netflix’s The Adam Project, a family adventure starring Ryan Reynolds as a guy who travels back in time to hang out with his younger self – kind of like if Disney remade Looper.
There’s also a new TV adaptation of The Time Traveler’s Wife, a film called Incredible But True from the director of that killer tire movie, and 57 Seconds about a ring that allows people to travel almost a minute into the past. Perhaps most intriguing is Shining Girls – which sounds like a documentary about an all-female Stephen King fan club but is actually a series about Elisabeth Moss tracking a time-traveling serial killer. Hopefully, part of it will take place in the ‘60s, so we can all start working on our “Peggy Olsen is secretly from the future” fan theories.
While time travel stories have always been popular, there might be a very good reason why we’re getting such an onslaught of them right now. It’s no secret that the past couple of years have been decidedly dumpster fire-esque, so it kind of makes sense that now is the perfect time to fantasize about taking a temporal vacation from the present.
