Zack Snyder Is Making His Own Knockoff Version of 'Star Wars'

Reader, have you ever sat down to watch the Star Wars films and felt there was something … inexplicably off? Do you feel the Lucasfilm team is remiss in not making each of its cinematic installments approximately four hours and two minutes long? Are the once-iconic characters and locales featured in the classic sci-fi franchise suddenly a bit … too on the nose? Are a really big fan of fan-fiction?

Well folks, in an offering that is bound to be the Frooty Rings cereal to the beloved intergalactic IP's brand-name Froot Loops, director Zack Snyder is creating his own not-Star Wars movie for Netflix. Based on a pitch the iconic director unsuccessfully presented to Lucasfilm roughly a decade ago, an idea The Hollywood Reporter described as a “more mature take on the universe created by George Lucas,” Snyder's movie, entitled Rebel Moon, has all the makings of an edgy Star Wars installment – minus the fact that it's not actually an edgy Star Wars installment. 

“The story is set in motion when a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy is threatened by the armies of a tyrannical regent named Balisarius,” the entertainment publication wrote of the upcoming film's plot. “Desperate people dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them make a stand.”

While to be clear, Snyder's film will have no connection to the Disney-owned property, Snyder spoke candidly about taking inspiration from the famed franchise. “This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan,” the Justice League director said. “It’s my love of sci-fi and a giant adventure. My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out."

However, it seems Snyder has already put the legwork into making his vision of a DNSWRMCU (Definitely Not Star Wars, Rebel Moon Cinematic Universe) a reality. “I’ve spent the last two or three years building out this universe," he continued. "Every corner has to be painted in. I’ve been doing designs, constantly drawing and really cultivating its fertile ground to make this world fully realized.”

Although Rebel Moon isn't set to start filming until early 2022 at the earliest, it's definitely not too soon to get excited for Snyder's sci-fi venture. I know I personally can't want to see giant yellow text reading "in a universe quite a ways from here ..." scrolling across the movie theater screen.
